We wouldn’t maintain this like a steam locomotive
You’ve spent years without data quality measures in place. Poor Data Quality creates a debt that becomes radically harder to pay the longer you wait.
We’ve worked with companies that face challenges preparing for upcoming technology investments. Common challenges include:
Not investing resources in ensuring data quality at the point of entry
Not following your ERP’s best practices, and implementing your current ERP to mimic legacy systems
Not Archiving or Disposing of older, unused records
With the impending S/4HANA migrations, more companies are trying to fix the underlying causes of these problems. Logic Point has a few ways in which we have helped clients find easier ways to prepare for S/4HANA
THE CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
1. No data governance at the point of entry
This causes serious issues when you start adding more and more parts. For example, Some drop-down lists can have tens of thousands of selections due to a lack of data governance with legacy system migration.
Solution
Starting with Cleansing and de-duplication can simplify your operations today and reduce the volume of the data you have to migrate tomorrow. In this example, de-duplicating those lists by fixing taxonomy will simplify system use for many users.Example: use the proper noun and modifiers in every record. So 2” BB and 2 Inch Ball Bearing and Ball Bearing 2” all become Bearing,Ball,2”
2. SAP was implemented to mirror legacy systems, not following best practices
This led to convoluted business processes that created considerable process overhead
Solution
Using a data orchestration engine, forms and workflows, a lot of these processes can be automated, creating a stopgap until the next system upgrade/re-implementation
3. Poor flagging and no archiving/disposition of old inventory records
Many inventory records are simply renamed to indicate that they are no longer valid, rather than flagging them for deletion or removing them.
Solution
Archiving these legacy items and their related records is the first step toward S4/HANA readiness.
Our customers have typically seen massive reductions in overhead through simple measures such as these. These engagements typically pay for themselves in a matter of months.
